External funding for a Think Maths visit

We have listed a couple of suppliers of external funding below.

Jack Petchey Award

Previously some schools have managed to fund a Think Maths visit with money from the Jack Petchey Award.

We’re not 100% sure of the eligibility criteria or the process to achieve this, but it’s worth looking into as relatively frequently a school tell us a booking was made possible with Jack Petchey money.

Blue Spark Foundation

‘Schools, colleges and community groups in England can apply for grants to support the education and development of children and young people through educational, cultural, sporting and other projects. Projects that will help enhance the self-confidence, teamwork skills and future employability of children and young people are of particular interest.’

The Blue Spark Foundation website lists academic activities such as STEM activities as an example of what the funding could be used for.

North Lanarkshire, Nottingham, Stoke on Trent, Blackburn with Darwen (ending in June 2026), Denbighshire (ending in June 2026), Manchester city (ending in June 2026), Newport (ending in June 2026) and Torfaen (ending in June 2026), can apply for grants from the Edina Trust to run science projects. London Mathematical Society – Small Grants for Education

https://www.lms.ac.uk/grants/small-grants-education
*This grant used to open for applications quarterly, but is currently being reviewed and so not currently open for applications. It may be that the LMS re-instate this grant, so it might be worth checking their website periodically.*

Up to £600-£800 to UK based applicants. The scheme will next open for applications on 1 August 2025.

Applications are accepted four times a year, and decisions about a month after the deadline in each case.

The grants are designed to help fund activities that meet either of the following aims: enhancing and enriching mathematical study beyond the curriculum, engaging the public with mathematics or encouraging unusual ways of communicating mathematics.

British Science Week – grants for a STEM activity

https://britishscienceweek.org/grants

Deadline: dates and deadline for 2027 yet to be announced

Up to £300-£700 to schools, through the Kick Start Grants for schools to run STEM activities during British Science Week (usually the second week of March, dates yet to be confirmed for 2027).

The basic Kick Start Grant could be used for a school to run a STEM activity. Think Maths can come in and run maths activities in your school.

And the more comprehensive Kick Start More Grant can be used for a school to host a science event or activity that involves your students and the local community. Think Maths regularly give talks and workshops at schools where other members of the community eg parents, other schools, are invited. So this is definitely something we can do!
