HELP AT INSIDE MATHS

The deadline for application is Friday 15 November 2024.

Inside Maths is a brand-new maths enrichment day for year 5 students, held at the Royal Institution, central London, on Monday 10 February 2025, featuring talks in the theatre from speakers such as Rob Eastaway and maths activities around the building. It is organised by Zoe Griffiths (who runs Think Maths)

Inside Maths is looking for a team of ‘maths enthusiasts’ to help out on the day. Your role on the day will include facilitating maths activities (including a giant fractal build activity), being a ‘maths role model’ (via your interactions with students) and supporting with administrative and logistical duties (eg signing people in on arrival, replenishing refreshments).

The Inside Maths day runs from 10:30am – 2pm, but we will need the Inside Maths team in attendance earlier to help set up, and to stay a bit later to help tidy up. Exact timings TBC, but we’re likely to need you from around 8:45am – 2:45pm.

We will also be running a short, in-person, training/briefing session in central London (venue TBC) on the afternoon of Tuesday 28 January 2025 which the Inside Maths team would be expected to attend. The training will likely run from 2pm, for around 1.5 hours. (If you can’t attend the training please still fill the form in – there’s an option to indicate this on the form).

To cover both your time on the day and at the training session, we will pay you an honorarium of £135. We cannot cover travel expenses in addition to this. Your lunch on the Inside Maths day will also be provided.

As part of the day you will have the opportunity to watch the talks (provided we don’t need you for something else at the time). And we hope that the event (and the training) will provide you with maths communication experience and ideas that will stand you in good stead in the future!

There are no rules about who can apply, provided you are 18 or over.

We’d like to encourage any individuals interested in /starting out in a career in maths or science communication or teaching to apply, along with students (of any mathematical science, under-graduate or post-graduate) and early career researchers. Or perhaps you work in industry and have the opportunity to take the day off and share your love of maths with the next generation!  Please join us!
